Hatchery
The club is very active in several areas concerning fishing and was one of the founding clubs of the Lough Ree Fish Hatchery, which is located at Coosan. The club carries out stream development work to enhance the habitat for spawning trout. The club also operates a fish trap for the hatchery on the Breensford River at Ballykeeran. The trout are trapped and stripped of their eggs and then released. The eggs are transported to the hatchery where they hatch into small fish and are then released back into the river as unfed fry. The survival rate of the eggs is much higher in the hatchery as there are no predators. It should be noted that these fry are wild fish whose parents are wild fish. Junior anglers are actively involved with the capture and release of spawning trout as well as the maintenance of the eggs while they are in the hatchery and releasing the unfed fry back into the river.

As one of our prominent club members says, just because the fish aren't feeding it doesn't mean that we cant.
Lough Keegan Lake Photos
Some years ago the
club stocked a small local lake with trout. The idea was that we would
have our own water to teach newcomers about fly fishing. Unfortunately
this did not work out and only lasted a couple of years.
